Message equivalence (or meaning equivalence) is the key to success on any Sorenson assessment. If the interpretation has the same impact and information as the original message - it is correct. The raters also look at patterns of errors related to language features, but most of the scoring is related to meaning.
There is not one "right way" to deliver an effective interpretation, all Sorenson screenings are based on the importance of meaning. Our rating team recognizes there are many different correct interpretations, including regional signs and cultural dialects. The most important criteria is "Did the interpreted message have the same effect as the source (original) message?"
Interpreting equivalent meaning requires language competency in the source and target languages. Your fluency, content knowledge, and understanding of the goals of the message will guide your choices.
